What is a Bar or Bat-Mitzvah?

The Bar-Mitzvah (or Bat Mitzvah, for girls) is a central piece of the Jewish tradition, a'coming of age' ceremony in which boys and girls take their place among the adults and, through their own voice, become a part of the community, ready to start assuming the roles and responsibilities of adulthood. Literally, it means that the young man (or woman) is now well versed in the 'mitzvot', the long list of behaviors that God expects his people to adhere to with regards to themselves, their families, their society and their faith.
